Ignition Interlock Law in Connecticut

Starting in Connecticut on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, all first-time DUI offenders, even those eligible for the Alcohol Education Program, will be required to use an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) for a period of 6 months. This penalty will increase for subsequent offenses. As a result of these changes, an offender will be unable to use any motor vehicle that is not equipped with such a device.

Prior to July 1, drivers eligible for the Alcohol Education program were exempt from the IID requirement. With this exemption removed, the door will be opened to a greater number of post-DUI arrests. Anyone who is arrested for operating a motor vehicle without an IID will face no less than thirty (30) days in jail that cannot be reduced or suspended by the court absent mitigating circumstances.
